ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the mediating effect of hardness on growth mindest and transition shock among nursing undergraduate interns, and to provide theoretical basis for promoting clinical adaptability of nurses. Methods:Totally 223 nursing undergraduates who practiced in five grade A hospitals in Shanghai city, Henan province and Jiangsu province were selected as the participants by convenient sampling from September to October 2022. General information questionnaire, Growth Mindset Scale (GMS), Hardness scale, and the Transition Shock of Newly Graduated Nurses (TSNGNS) were used in the questionnaire cross section survey. Results:Totally 210 valid questionnaires were retrieved. The scores of growth mindset, hardness and transition shock were (32.67 ± 4.52), (63.80 ± 13.51) and (86.97 ± 18.70), respectively. Growth mindset was positively correlated with hardness ( r=0.369, P<0.01), growth mindset was negatively correlated with transition shock ( r=-0.334, P<0.01), and resilience was negatively correlated with transition shock ( r=-0.346, P<0.01). Hardness had a partial mediating effect on the association between growth mindset and transition shock in nursing undergraduate interns, with 27.35% mediating effect. Conclusions:Growth mindset can affect the transition shock in nursing undergraduate interns through hardness. Nursing educators should pay attention to the development of growth mindset and the cultivation of hardness of nursing interns, and take targeted measures to reduce the transition shock and promote clinical adaptability.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the relationship between transition shock of nursing interns and occupational cognition and coping styles, and explore the factors affecting the status quo of nursing interns transformation, so as to provide guidance for the development of nursing students to respond to clinical transition shock. Methods:A cross-sectional survey of nursing students in Hunan Province was conducted among nursing interns from 18 colleges and universities in Hunan Province by using the General Demographic Data Questionnaire and the Transition Shock of Newly Graduated Nurses Scale, the Nurses' Professional Cognitive Survey Scale, and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. The collected data were processed by SPSS 18.0 software, and multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to analyze the influencing factors of the shock. Results:The overall scores of nursing students transition shock were (64.49±16.33) points, while the transition shock was negatively correlated with occupational cognition ( r=-0.433, P<0.01) and positive response ( r=-0.263, P<0.01). And the occupational cognition, proposed academic qualification, reason for choosing nursing profession and positive response were the main factors affecting the transition shock of nursing students ( P=0.00, R2=0.21). Conclusion:The transition shock of nursing students is at the middle level, and has a strong negative correlation with the nursing students' occupational cognition and positive response. School teachers and clinical instructors should pay attention to the confusion, suspicion and unclear feelings and experiences caused by the transition shock of nursing students, helping nursing students to improve their occupational cognition, and learning how to positively respond to the transition shock problem, thereby improving the quality of clinical internship teaching and training of nursing students.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the status of transition shock, career adaptation and professional identity among nursing interns, and to explore the mediating effect of professional identity on career adaptation and transition shock. Methods:In February 2022, 500 nursing students from 18 nursing colleges in Henan province and Shaanxi province were selected as the research subjects by convenient sampling method. General data questionnaire, Professional Identity Questionnaire of Nursing Students, Career Adaptability Scale of college students and Chinese version of Transition Impact Assessment Scale of Nursing Undergraduate Interns were used to conduct the questionnaire survey. Results:The career adaptability score of nursing intern was (133.59 ± 22.58); professional identity score was (63.35 ± 14.06); transition impact score was (45.18 ± 10.17). Transition shock was negatively correlated with career adaptation and professional identity ( r=-0.328, -0.484, both P<0.01). Occupational identity had a partial mediating effect on career adaptation and transition shock, accounting for 64.29% of the total effect. Conclusions:The transition shock of nursing interns is at medium level. Nursing educators can reduce the degree of transition shock by improving their professional identity to nursing and their own career adaptation, so as to better adapt to the professional role.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Transition programs have been adopted by many healthcare institutions to assist the new graduate nurse as they adjust to the work environment. The use of structured residency programs and prolonged orientations are considered best practices to ease the new graduate nurse into their role. This study aims to describe the lived experience of new graduate registered nurses as they enter the workforce.@*Design@#Using a qualitative research design, Van Manen's phenomenological inquiry, study participants were selected using non-probability purposive sampling. Data were collected between December 2018- September 2019 with in-depth interviews using semi-structured questionnaires. The sample (N=7) consisted of participants born between the years 1986-1996, graduated within three years of the study, and practice in the northeastern region of the United States.@*Method@#Amodified Colaizzi approach allowed the researchers to return to the study participants to validate themes.@*Findings@#The experience and perceptions of new graduate registered nurses are unified in two major themes discussed within this article: emotional ambivalence and the need to escape.@*Conclusion@#New graduate nurses continue to feel overwhelmed and need structured guidance during their professional transition training programs. In the absence of strong support by the institution, new graduates leave the bedside.
